    How to Apply for Passport Online 2021?

    Applying for a new passport has been made easy with the online application process. Whether you want to apply for a fresh passport or get a re-issue of the passport, you can do so from the Passport Seva Portal. Through this portal, you can also locate nearest Passport Seva Kendra, Common Service Centers and check Appointment Availability Status at different Passport Offices. Although the process of online passport application is quite simple, it can be overwhelming for people who do not have proper knowledge about this. For those looking forward to apply for passport online, the step by step instructions for the same has been provided below.

    Instructions to Apply for Passport Online 2021

    There are two different ways to apply online for passport. One is via submitting online application form and the other is via submitting scanned copy of downloaded e-form. Let’s check out both these ways one by one.

    Apply for Passport via Online Form Submission

    The guidelines for applying for passport through online form submission are as follows:

    Step 1: Go to the official Passport Seva Portal and click on the New User Registration tab. To fill the registration form, you need to provide personal details such as name, date of birth, email id, etc. Choice for passport office and a security question with answer should be provided in the form as well. Users also need to create a login and password at the time of registration.

    Step 2: Once all the details are entered as asked, check the form carefully to be sure that you haven’t made any error in it. After that, provide the captcha and click on the Register button to complete the registration process.

    Step 3: Once the registration is done successfully, login to the Passport Seva Online Portal with the login id and password created at the time of registration.

    Step 4: Click on the ‘Apply for Fresh Passport/Re-issue of Passport’ link to open online passport application form. If applying under Fresh Issuance category, please make sure you never held a passport of the applied category.

    Step 5: Fill in the application form by providing details like place of birth, gender, employment type, identity proof details, family details, educational qualification, etc. After providing all the information into the application form, you need to submit it online. A ‘View Saved/Submitted Applications’ page will appear.

    Step 6: On the ‘View Saved/Submitted Applications’ page, click on the ‘Pay and Schedule Appointment’ link to schedule an appointment. Online payment has been made mandatory for booking appointments at all PSK/ POPSK/ PO.

    Online payment can be made using any one of the following modes:

    • Credit/Debit Card (MasterCard and Visa)
    • Internet Banking (State Bank of India (SBI) Associate Banks and Other Banks)
    • SBI Bank Challan

    Step 7: Upon payment of the application fee successfully, click on the ‘Print Application Receipt’ link to print the application receipt containing Application Reference Number (ARN)/ Appointment Number.

    Step 8: Visit the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK)/ Regional Passport Office (RPO) where appointment has been booked, along with original documents.

    Apply for Passport via e-Form Submission

    The guidelines for applying for passport through e-form submission are as follows:

    Step 1: Go to the official Passport Seva Portal click on the ‘Download e-Form’ link to download the e-Form for passport.

    Step 2: Now, fill the downloaded e-Form by providing details like Type of Application, Type of Passport Booklet, Name, Gender, Date of Birth, Marital Status, Aadhaar Number, Father’s Name, Mother’s Name, Present Residential Address, Identity Certificate, etc

    Step 3: Click on the ‘Validate and Save’ button to generate an XML file, which will be required later for uploading in the system.

    Step 4: Register through the Passport Seva Online Portal by following the steps discussed above and login to the portal with the registered login id.

    Step 5: Upload the XML file generated above by clicking on the ‘Upload e-Form’ link. A ‘View Saved/Submitted Applications’ page will appear.

    Step 6: On the ‘View Saved/Submitted Applications’ page, click on the ‘Pay and Schedule Appointment’ link to pay the fee online and schedule an appointment.

    Step 7: Click the “Print Application Receipt” link to print the application receipt containing Application Reference Number (ARN)/Appointment Number.

    Step 8: Visit the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK)/ Regional Passport Office (RPO) where appointment has been booked, along with original documents.

    Note: Carrying printout of application receipt is no longer required. An SMS with the appointment details is also accepted as proof of appointment during the visit to Passport Office.

    Passport Online 2021: Important Documents 

    For the applicants who are applying for passport under normal scheme, the following documents should be carried at the Passport Seva Kendra:

    1. Proof of Date of Birth (DOB)

    Any one of the following documents:

    • Birth Certificate issued by the Registrar of Births and Deaths or the Municipal Corporation or any other prescribed authority, whosoever has been empowered under the Registration of Birth and Deaths Act, 1969 to register the birth of a child born in India
    • Transfer/ School leaving/ Matriculation Certificate issued by the school last attended/ recognized educational board
    • Policy Bond issued by the Public Life Insurance Corporations/Companies having the DOB of the holder of the insurance policy
    • Copy of an extract of the service record of the applicant (only in respect of Government servants) or the Pay Pension Order (in respect of retired Government Servants), duly attested by the officer/ in-charge of the Administration of the concerned Ministry/ Department of the applicant
    • Aadhaar Card/ E-Aadhaar
    • Election Photo Identity Card (EPIC) issued by the Election Commission of India
    • PAN Card issued by the Income Tax Department
    • Driving License issued by the Transport department of concerned state Government
    • A declaration given by the Head of the Orphanage/Child Care Home on their official letter head of the organization confirming the DOB of the applicant

    Any one of the following documents:

    • Water Bill
    • Telephone (landline or post paid mobile bill)
    • Electricity bill
    • Income Tax Assessment Order
    • Election Commission Photo ID card
    • Proof of Gas Connection
    • Certificate from Employer of reputed companies on letter head
    • Spouse’s passport copy (First and last page including family details mentioning applicant’s name as spouse of the passport holder), (provided the applicant’s present address matches the address mentioned in the spouse’s passport)

    Things to keep in mind while applying for online passport

    • Only emergency/ medical cases and preapproved categories may visit Passport Seva Kendra without appointment. Service will be provided at the discretion of Passport Seva Kendra in-charge/ Passport Officer.
    • Appointment can be booked by clicking the ‘Schedule Appointment’ link after successful fee payment.
    • In case of minor applicants below 4 years of age, recent passport size photograph with white background should be carried at the time of DV.
    • In case the applicant does not visit the Passport Seva Kendra within 90 days from the online form submission resubmission of application form is required
    • The validity of an adult’s passport is 10 years while for minor’s passport it is restricted to five years or till they attain the age of 18, whichever is earlier.
    • Applicants who have a criminal case pending in any court can be issued a passport on the condition that they enclose a written permission by the court allowing them to travel abroad.
    • Indian citizens belonging to Nagaland cannot apply for the passport under the Tatkal scheme.
    • Only the present address will be endorsed on the passport and not the permanent address.
    • If applicants with confirmed appointments are unable to visit the Passport Seva Kendra or a Post Office Passport Seva Kendra, they can reschedule the same. Rescheduling is allowed up to 3 times in a year of the first appointment date.

    I found a mistake in my online application form. How can I correct it?

    At the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK)/ Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK) please ask the Citizen Service Executive (CSE) to make the required changes in the application form.

    Can anyone else submit my passport application on my behalf?

    Under the new system, it is mandatory for all applicants to be physically present at the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) along with Application Print receipt and original documents after submitting application online.

    I want to apply for a fresh passport. Can I apply for the passport at a Passport Office as it is near to my place?

    No, you cannot apply for a passport at a Passport Office. You need to visit Passport Seva Kendra/ Post Office Passport Seva Kendra to submit your passport application.

    How much do I have to pay for Police Clearance Certificate (PCC)?

    The fee to be paid for Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) is Rs.500/-.

    What should I do if amount is deducted from my account but the portal displays the payment status as failed?

    In case the payment status is failed and the amount gets deducted, the deducted amount will be refunded by SBI to applicant’s bank within seven working days.

    I did not select the ‘SMS Services’ while submitting the application form but I want to enroll for SMS service then what should I do?

    You may enroll for SMS service using the link ‘Enroll for SMS Services’ available under ‘Services’ section after login. SMS service cannot be availed once the passport application has been processed at the PSK.

    How can I reset my password?

    You can either answer your hint question or reset your password by selecting the ‘Send a message to my registered e-mail id’ option available on the ‘Having trouble logging in?’ screen.

    If I am not staying at my permanent address, where will the police verification take place?

    Police verification will be done at both permanent and present address.

    What is the mode for dispatch of passport?

    The passport is dispatched by India Post through Speed Post to the present address of the applicant. Passport can be collected by the applicant personally over the counter at the RPO only in case of urgency.

    My present address changed while my passport application is still under processing. How can I update my address in the submitted application?

    You can submit an application at your respective Regional Passport Office (RPO) to update your present address. Carry your present address proof along with a request letter while visiting the RPO.

    I have received someone else’s passport through speed post. What should I do?

    You should surrender the passport at your respective Regional Passport Office immediately.

    If my old passport has been lost or damaged, what should I do?

    Loss of passport should be immediately reported to the nearest Police Station and to the Passport Office (PO) or Indian Mission, if abroad. You can then apply for re-issue of passport at your nearest Passport Seva Kendra/ Post Office Passport Seva Kendra.

    My passport booklet is damaged & I have to go abroad on urgent basis. What should I do?

    In case your passport has not been damaged beyond recognition, i.e. passport number is legible, name is legible and photo is intact, you can apply for re-issue of passport under the Tatkal scheme. But, if passport has been damaged beyond recognition, then you cannot apply under the Tatkal scheme. In that case, you need to visit Passport Officer at your nearest Passport Seva Kendra to get the passport on urgent basis.

    What are the documents needed to get a passport in case of lost passport?

    In case of lost passport the following documents must be submitted along with the application for re-issue of passport:

    • Proof of present address
    • Proof of date of birth
    • Affidavit stating how and where the passport got lost/ damaged
    • Police report in original
    • Self-attested photocopy of first two and last two pages, including ECR/ Non-ECR page of old passport, if available
